Our History

Creating the Coalition

A social-justice movement that grew out of Dr. King's Operation Breadbasket — three organizations, one mission.

1971 · Operation PUSH

1984 → 1996 · Rainbow PUSH Coalition

Our Founder

From Breadbasket to a national coalition

Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. began his activism as a student in 1960, desegregating the Greenville public library, and became a full-time organizer for SCLC in 1965. Dr. King appointed him to direct Operation Breadbasket in Chicago.

In December 1971 he founded Operation PUSH to expand educational, business and employment opportunities for the disadvantaged and people of color. After his 1984 presidential campaign he launched the National Rainbow Coalition.

In 1996 the two merged into the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. Today his son, Yusef D. Jackson, leads the Coalition into its next chapter — honoring the legacy, building the future.
